I am on both platforms, doing some cross-posting. At first I fretted about overextending myself or losing my focus but now I have found that each platform offers features that suit the different needs I have as a writer. On Substack I write essays and memoir. I also post these pieces on Medium but also on Medium I publish writing about writing. My Substack subscribers would not be interested in those pieces. So Medium is an outlet for me for writing about writing.

My funnel is narrower, with Medium at the top :D I'm still getting the hang of how Substack works, but avoiding putting all your eggs in one basket is always good advice.

I'm mostly focusing on substack at the moment and copying over some of my articles to medium. Currently not earning or growing much on medium but that's ok.

Oh no. You were on a roll. Smart to let Google know Substack is your home. Repurposing makes sense then.

Do you have already some paid subs, Sophie?

For you the community aspect is important as your stories attract people who want to live a different/ new life

I’ve got two paid subs lol - really need to start putting some more effort into building that community aspect!

Hello @kristina, thank for this article... So if I had just rebrand my website to make it a blog too, you would rather consider publishing on medium and on substack, but not really on the website (SEO etc...) ?

Love this Kristina. It's definitely not an either-or scenario. When I hear people say "I'm jumping ship" I laugh...who told you that you can't do both? I am...well, was. I'm going to deprioritize Medium because the earnings dropped like 90%. My last piece made 47 cents on Medium, but an estimated $120 in annualized revenue on Substack (but I only got a portion of that immediately of course).

But copy and pasting one story onto both isn't too hard. For me it's the time-consuming nature of the comments on Medium, an hour responding to comments isn't worth 47 cents lol.

Thanks for the mention chica! Although I'm in the top 80 not top 70...for now. I'll get there soon though. Someone asked me about your course today, I said it's an awesome course, extremely thorough and your energy is infectious. I also said you're underpricing yourself (which is true) 😆

I’m a writer on both. I’m working on it, going like a tortoise 🐢 and I love this article! You’ve mentioned everything clearly.

I agree totally about not putting all your eggs in one basket -- especially with the price of eggs these days! Currently, I see Medium as more for exposure than pay, but you never know how their algo is going to change next. So that could shift. Sometimes I make a LOT of money on Medium -- I've made $3K-plus in one day when my viral article first came out (https://medium.com/minds-without-borders/we-could-learn-a-lot-about-sex-from-the-dutch-8864066b2d99) Usually, of course, I make less and sometimes much less. I don't see myself leaving either platform. Kristina is right that they can work together.

I’m not sure I could take your class because of my difficulties hearing you when I watch your videos. I have a hearing impairment and for some voices I have to guess a lot.

It’s unfortunate because I write on both platforms and I’m learning.

Just in case you have captions or printed material I wanted to check?

Sure. I would appreciate your tips. Many people speak quickly and the audio and captions don’t agree. I’m aware that it’s my problem and don’t expect others to change for me. I’m just interested in finding materials that can be read so that I can back up audio and avoid confusion.

The only captions I use regularly are on my Smart Tv and sometimes on my phone. I used to depend on my hearing aides but I have lost more of my range of hearing as I age.

I need captions more and more. Standup comedy and zoom calls have started to be exhausting to follow. Trying so hard to hear is tiring.

You gave me many good places to explore. Most people don’t realize that hearing loss is hereditary and often starts early in your forties. I’m 65 now and got my first set of hearing aids at 52. It’s an area we need more thought about when we depend upon technology as much as we do.

I appreciate your help.🌹
