I opened the email expecting a ban. Instead I got an apology from Chris Best (“This sucks. I’m sorry.”). Here's what really happened and why every writer should pay attention now
What I missed to share in the article is that we luckily have 2FA :) This makes a HUGE difference when it comes to data security and authentication. But you're right, this SHOULD NOT happen. I bet they gonna learn and install better systems to protect our data now. What do you think?
Many, many thanks for the heads up, Kristina. It seems to be happening on every platform these days. But am heartened that he reached out to give you the heads up.
I got the email, shared it with ChatGPT, and asked whether I should be concerned. Sparky, that's what I call my ChatGPT explained everything just as you did. Great job, Kristina. I can imagine seeing that email after you were having discussions with an attorney about Substack polices would be a jolt. I'm glad it was the one we all received. 😊
Hi Marvin, thanks for Petting me know. To be honest I also hate to sound salesy. But at the same time if I don't tell people no one knows. Do you have a suggestion for me?
I mean where would it fit better
If I go with the simple CTA subscribe or so I would also need to add some context info.
I'll write a post about this as many aren't sure about CTA buttons and stuff.
Conversion is good but if course it's like a little ad break:) if I put it at the bottom I often hear no one saw it and they missed a class or so
Got the same email. I do think your interpretation is exactly what Substack wants you to think! But I am worried still. For one… this happened in October and you tell us 6 months later? (Or 5)… Second… then entire email is hella vague!
I had one of my subscribers receive this email. He wasn't overly concerened about it, but I was a bit taken aback, since I had no prior knowledge of this. He bascially sent me the email and said, "What's up with this?" I had to admit, I had no idea. And until this post, I didn't know if was even an issue with others. I hope others don't lose subscribers over this.
I received the same email from the CEO. I told him I appreciates his "honesty and candor." BUT, I want to know who STOLE my private information? Access = STOLEN!! I also want to know what they are doing specifically to prevent this from happening again.
Did he reply? When it comes to impersonation attacks and stuff on social media it's also hard to track down the people behind it. Since this is data from a few months back... maybe they just found out about it. Dunno...
Chris emailed me at 3:05am to let me know he had emailed you. Your status on Substack is climbing!
Kidding. Great post.
haha, good one, Mike. Love your cartoons!! Super idea :) I bet one day one will get super viral
If you are glad they "did own the mistake" you're missing the big picture. You cannot fail with other people's sensitibe information.

Honestly, not holding my breath on that one...
By the way, I have a big surprise coming up tomorrow. 😁
Oh what is it? Anything to do with Substack and Best?
Hi Kistina, my surprise is now live, be sure to check my feed to find out. 😎
It's better than that. You'll just have to wait until tomorrow. 😏

I did not receive one but thanks for posting about it.
Thank you for sharing this. I don’t think I had a strange email bit will more alert.
Well I’m glad I read this because I did receive one and it went to my spam box. 🤦♀️ So that makes me feel nervous. But thank you for the heads up. 🙏
Yes, I received the same email.

I didn't get it but I'm glad I read this. And the reminder to be vigilant!!
Cool post but I have to tell you, those promo inserts break the flow and make it hard to read.
I needed to go back a paragraph each time to understand what's going on.

Just put it all at the very end - if someone read the whole article then there’s where people expect upsell.

Was it really the CEO???
I received the same email. And while I'm concerned, I'm not sure what I can do other than to be careful.
Yep, I received it as well!

No, he didn’t write back.
