Haha.. oh no.. that's a really good question, Sam. I'll ask Ariel about this topic. All I know is that true crime writers earn good money because people really spend time reading their stories. TC is one of the hidden champions on Medium. Would you agree?
I don't think you have to commit the crime to get Boosted. I remember several stories that got distributed by Medium's editors in the last years. So why shouldn't one of your stories get picked?
