Thank you for this breakdown. What would you say to someone who's ready to publish their book but has been greatly turned off to Amazon? Is Amazon as important for authors as people say? Or are there other options?
It’s a tricky one. Amazon has so much market power, but I understand people’s reluctance to engage with the platform. Bezos’ upcoming wedding-arama probably won’t help! Ultimately authors have to examine their own conscience and decide what is most important to them. Sorry I can’t be more definitive.
Some authors hedge and launch on Amazon for 90 days of KU membership, especially if they’re trying to get to bestseller in their category, then they cancel their KU and some unpublish their books on Amazon completely and go wide on all the other booksellers.
Congratulations, Fleur, on another excellent article providing valuable information on how to launch a non-fiction book successfully. So much valuable insight here. We were fortunate to have Fleur as the guest book marketing coach on one of my posts, interviewing two 60s-plus female authors launching their first books. Fleur went above and beyond to provide each with a marketing plan. Her generous feedback to Anne and Nikki can be found on my Substack - 'Author-Come-Lately'. Fleur is providing me with a marketing plan, which I am so looking forward to seeing!
