It's certainly a pain, but my dedicated Medium readers thankfully followed me over to my newsletter without much of a hassle - they clicked the links in my articles and leapt across with no trouble!
While I still post on Medium now and then, Substack has become my primary home, so having their eyes here was important to me.
Thanks for this - I went over and had a look and I was able to export my old subscribers but not anyone who has currently subscribed. So I exported my old subscribers - now thinking about adding them to substack and just ditch Medium altogether...
After this call I’ve decided to close my medium publication effective May 31st. The Taoist Online currently has 20k followers, nearly 1000 writers and accumulated over 80k views last month. I can’t support a platform that practices lock-in and a walled garden for writers. They are a parasitic website and I can’t philosophically continue to lure writers to Medium anymore.
Let's talk about this via DM and let me help you convert those followers into subscriber, Patrick. Don't give up too early. Medium is still a great place to be. But I feel your anger especially if the connections feel empty and although you're growing you're longing for MORE. More freedom. I feel you.
I didn't think of checking the details behind these new subscription features (options). Luckily I had already imported my subscribers to Substack about a month before. I have decided to treat medium like an opportunity to get people to my substack through a link in the bottom of my stories. Next step will be to offer a freebie through the link.
yeah, now I need to learn how to make the lead magnets smartly :) I might try also Dana’s style of posting a short part of my substack articles and then linking to it.

Thanks for the information, Kristina!

Agreed. It’s simply another place to funnel people into Substack.

Thanks for sharing this, Kristina and Patrick.
No problem!
I downloaded my list, but yes, a lot of asterisks. We should probably all do this periodically.
This is just another sign that Medium is stumbling.
