My writing earns enough so I can go part-time in my main job. It’s so exciting to be in control of what I do.

This hasn’t been easy. It took 18 months of hard work. And a zillion mistakes. But my little writing business is flourishing.

I started on Medium with nothing. No followers. No writing experience. No knowledge of social media. My only advantage was my curiosity and willingness to learn.

So if I can do this. Anyone can.

Let me show you the 5 steps that worked for me.

Step 1 — Start to write

The start is supposed to suck.

In my 1st month on Medium, I wrote 7 articles. And they had 18 reads. Not each. In total. But this doesn’t matter in this stage.

What matters is writing. Anything will do. Conquer your fear. Overcome your perfectionist. Beat your procrastination. These hold you back.

You think writing is about words. But step 1 is conquering yourself. One of my subscribers has paid for a coaching session, bought all my courses. But hasn’t published his first piece yet. He’s struggling to take that first step.

Define success as pressing that publish button. Ignore the numbers. They are irrelevant. Set the goal of publishing 10 pieces. And when you do celebrate like a crazy party animal. You’re ahead of 90% of people who never take action on their dreams.

Congratulations you’re on your way. 

Step 2 — Write more

After 3 months find a way to write more.

Online creation is a volume game. More is always better. Few things are certain. Except this — success comes from writing more. Most find this tough to do.

So here’s some tips on increasing your output:

Find your golden hour

Creating is mentally tiring.

Write when you’re at your best. And free from external demands. You want the sweet spot of feeling most energised and least needed. This might mean getting up 1 hour earlier. Or writing when the kids go to bed. Or 7–11 am on weekends.

These are your golden hours. Defend them ruthlessly. Block them on your calendar. Choose the right place. Leave your phone in another room. Put on music. Do whatever it takes.

Then write.

Make some efficiency gains

You can boost your output without using more time.

Set up systems. They’ll supercharge your writing. My favourite two are batching and checklists.

Instead of writing one article at a time rotate your tasks. Write one day. Edit the next day. Don’t write and edit in the same session. They’re different mental activities. Leaving a gap between tasks gives the brain time to work in the background.

Checklists are an underrated hack. It makes your writing faster. Create an editing checklist. And one for crafting headlines.

The goal for step 2 is to write more. Once you’ve done this. You’re ready for step 3.

And it’s time to dial up the clarity

Step 3 — Clarify what your offer

No one finds success without a focus.

Writers argue with me about this. I get it. It feels scary to narrow your focus. But every writer who has made it big. Did it on the back of a specific topic.

When you’re a big name people will listen to whatever you say. But until then readers need to know what they’ll get from you.

Two fears hold writers back from developing a focus:

Will I run out of ideas?

When you get a writing focus. You’ll have more ideas, not less.

Constraints release creativity. When you focus you tell your brain what to look for. Ideas appear when walking, showering, and waking up. When you are stuck you know what to research.

Will I lose readers?

I admit I worried about this.

I thought if I wrote about multiple topics I was casting my net wider. And could catch more readers. But a niche gives you tasty bait to attract people. My growth exploded when I focused on 1 theme.

If you don’t know what your niche is. Here’s how to find it. Write for 6+ months then look at your metrics. Identify what is most popular. And focus on that.

But don’t panic. You don’t marry your niche. It grows with you.

Step 4 — Discover what works

You’ve got your focus. So now it’s time to become an effective writer.

Writing is the process of running experiments. 80% of what you write will fail. This is normal. It’s a volume game. So keep writing. But when something works. Work out why and find a way to do more of it.

For example, I write an article with 5 points. The point about outlines gets a ton of comments. I notice this and write a full article on outlines. Or say content for ‘new writers’ does well. I write for articles aimed at new writers.

Your writing strategy has 2 parts:

• Exploration — Try out new ideas. Test fresh content. Experiment with different approaches.

• Harness what works. Repeat what connects with readers.

Combine these 2 elements. And your growth will explode.

Step 5 — Start to fly

Once you’ve built this solid foundation. Everything becomes possible.

• earns $5k/month giving him the freedom to travel around Asia for 10 months.

Like most writers, he stopped writing because he didn't get the attention he was looking for. A story that was important to him flopped and so he gave up.

is in good company. Many up-and-coming writers stop writing far too early.

As a writing coach, I often see how self doubt and reluctance to surpass themselves can rob people of their potential. Sometimes too high expectations of themselves or perfectionism also get in the way.

Even published book authors put aside the passion they once felt. Their worries and fears overshadow their ambition and keep them treading water.

I'm glad Ben was able to overcome the resistance he faced to become the impressive writer he is now.

My friend from the Medium publication New Writers Welcome told me about Ben. Since one of my WOW-worthy bootcampers from 2022 couldn’t join the grand finale of this year’s Medium Kickstarter Bootcamp I hosted with the incredible 13x author, Boost nominator, and Medium top writer from I’d Rather Be Writing, she suggested asking Ben.

In our live session, as a non-native speaker, I was impressed by his vocabulary, and his way of speaking and expressing himself, not only on the page but also in our conversation.

Four things stood out the most:

#1 Ben wrote 500 stories, 84 of them got Boosted

People often only share their successes, their trophies, and medals with you, but much like the famous swimmer Michael Phelps, who stayed in the pool a little longer than most swimmers to train day and night for the next performance, Ben has written 500 long stories, more than most of the well-known top writers,

That means he's put pen to paper 500 times. Of those 500 long form stories, (only) 84 were boosted.

That's 17%.

Bootcamper was impressed by that number.

Often new writers want to get on the platform and BOOM they get boosted and earn $500 for a story. It happens (as with bootcamper ), but it's also smart to build a nice library of stories so that Boost nominators and Medium curators know that this is someone who consistently writes about specific meta-topics that interest them and an expert on their own experiences.

#2 Ben doesn’t write for Uncle Algo or the Boost Gods

Like me, Ben once worked as a journalist. At some point, he realized that he wanted to write about the things that mattered to him and not the things that his boss told him to write about or that were part of the agenda.

Because of this experience, Ben is not someone who would write for the Boost or Uncle Alsgo. He writes what he has a passion for. Being a musician himself (he plays the saxophone), he writes about "The Real Slim Shady" Eminem, Super Mario Galaxy, his favorite movies, or what he thinks about politics.

Often, new writers start by writing what the algorithm wants in order to get clicks, views and readers. They "learn" what Boost nommers are looking for and publish stories they may not be happy or proud of a few years later.

Ben, who is a Boost nommer himself, writes what he finds fun and relevant, and loves finding gems in the Medium universe that he can nominate for a fat Boost.

There’s a lot of excitement about writing with AI on Medium.

However, AI writing is a major issue.

Now the publishing platform Medium wants to strike a balance between innovation and risk.

Human writers need protection against AI “writing”.

The platform announced some huge changes to their Medium Partner Program that will change the game for writers.

I received an email from Medium in which they talk about their…

• new AI policy

• what is allowed and what isn’t

• who it affects

• what writers have to do

These new changes I’ll break down for you are effective May of this year and are part of a larger vision. 

Medium is for human storytelling, not AI generated writing. 

Scott Lamb, VP of Content shared:

Readers tell us constantly that they want stories written by people about their experience and insights.

We are a home for human writing full stop. 

So, with the new policy, Medium’s goal is to reduce AI generated writing by changing the way they promote and “advertise” stories and pay writers.

The change that Medium is making is that from May 1st, 2024, stories with AI generated text, whether labeled as such or not, may no longer be listed behind the paywall as part of the Medium Partner Program (MPP).

This means…

• you are not allowed to try to make money with AI generated writing anymore. 

• accounts that have fully AI generated writing may have their stories removed from the paywall and or be revoked from the partner program. 

I hear you say…

What is considered AI generated writing? 

So AI generated writing is writing where the majority of the content has been created by an AI writing program.

This means you should be concerned if you use AI to create your content

• with little or no edits

• fact checking or 

• improvements. 

What is AI assistive technology?

We allow the responsible use of AI assistive technology on Medium.

AI-assistance empowers an author to level up to make their ideas clearer.

In my opinion, it is still fine to use AI tools to assist with writing. 

For example, since I’m a non native, I use Grammarly to check for any mistakes and it is fine to continue using it. 

We don’t need to disclose this use.

My opinion and concerns about the AI policy

Not only are the recognition tools inadequate, but it is hard to imagine that they could ever be otherwise, since the goal of AI is to make its results indistinguishable from those of humans.

It's scary to think that authentic authors are threatened with being kicked out of the Medium Partner Program.

I think it's right to be concerned about our work being falsely “labeled”, but we have to accept that this is the “new normal”.

We need to be prepared to stay calm and defend ourselves when it happens.

Nevertheless, in my humble opinion, I don’t see how Medium can control everything.

In February 2024 there were..

• 2.4 million stories published

• on average that’s 80k posts per day. 

However, I think they should at least be able to remove the obvious ones.

In addition, Medium has already done very important work to combat AI by using human curators in the Boost program.

The process for recognizing AI is being continuously refined.

Hopefully Medium’s new AI policy can help clean the air. 

Only time can tell.

A — I like it. It’s the right action to take.

B — Who determines what is/what isn’t AI? Will writers receive any notifications, or will their stories just be picked off in the dead of night. If a story is flagged, what recourse will readers have? Who will they address? What role will editors play here?

C — It’s troubling though that my post could be considered AI when it’s not. I mostly write opinions and personal essays. I wonder if my opinion piece is in trouble.

D — If people would just play nice . . . !

E — The unintended consequences could be a problem for all of us…

F — It’s frightening to think that authentic writers face being kicked out of the program. Through friends at Medium, I have seen in real time what consequences unjustified accusations can have.

In today’s post, will walk you through Medium’s latest changes and tell you what you need to know in order to maximize your success.

1. Pub crawl

On Tuesday, March 19 th, Medium hosted its inaugural Pub crawl. This was a virtual event designed to show off Medium’s publications.

• Publications are a cornerstone to Medium’s ongoing strategy.

• Publication editors essentially run communities housed within Medium that serve as discussion hubs on a wide variety of subjects.

There were a few technical issues with the Pub Crawl, but overall I thought it was a very valuable event.

Medium’s CEO Tony Stubblebine stopped by my expo booth for a few minutes and it was enlightening to hear more details about his vision for the platform. The way he put it, Medium isn’t “changing,” it’s more that it’s going through a course correction to bring the user experience closer to what he envisioned when he took over.

Essentially, many of the tactics that could be used to develop a following in years past are no longer effective.

However, if writers adapt to the new expectations, they have a good chance of achieving a more sustainable form of success.

2. No more AI generated writing

Medium has officially announced a ban on AI-generated stories. Writers who violate this ban will have their Partner Program enrollment revoked.

You can still use tools to check your spelling and grammar, but don’t use applications that generate text.

Keep in mind that every platform has a set of conduct guidelines. Across all platforms, things like hate speech and harassment are banned.

However, there is some variation over the degree to which these guidelines are enforced.

From my experience, Medium offers a very kind and supportive community. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to the toxic environments you find elsewhere on the internet. The reason the Medium community is so nice is because the moderators are diligent about removing fraudulent content.

Publications like The Writing Cooperative have even gone so far as to ban AI-images.

Simply put, Medium is a platform for human created content, and I applaud that point of emphasis.

*Within the next days, Kristina will share a deep dive video about the new AI policy that will go into effect on May 1st.

3. Scrubbing the fake accounts

Periodically, Medium does some housekeeping to clear out the fake accounts. When that happens, you might see a drop in your followers and subscribers.

This is nothing to panic about.

Despite the vigilance of the moderators, fake accounts sometimes get through.

Occasionally I see a cloned account that features my name and profile picture, but usually Medium catches and removes those accounts within a few hours.

Last month, one of my author friends wrote me in a panic because her account had been flagged, but that, too, was quickly corrected and the flag was removed.

Dealing with fake accounts and the efforts to remove them are just something we have to deal with.

It’s important to have patience and be mindful that Medium is doing its best to provide us with a safe community where quality writing is allowed to flourish.

4. Don’t involved with groups that generate artificial traffic

Medium also places an emphasis on legitimate traffic, so don’t get involved in any kind of system designed to send artificial traffic to your posts.

There are a lot of “farm” groups on Facebook where users can leave a link for a “view exchange.”

That is not a good practice.

It is, however, important to participate in legitimate communities and engage in thoughtful interactions on articles.

To put it simply, engage with Medium as if it’s a magazine. Read and respond to the articles that interest you.

If something doesn’t interest you, move on.

Use the platform honestly and you shouldn’t have any problems.

5. Boost has helped to make Medium profitable

In his opening presentation, Tony Stubblebine indicated that the number of subscribers has increased to the point where the platform is now profitable.

Boost and the Friends of Medium membership tier are two of the factors that made this possible.

This is good news for writers who are interested in producing quality content.

It shows that the Boost program is working as envisioned.

Writers are producing the kind of quality content that can’t be found elsewhere on the internet, and word is spreading.

Medium appears to have found its sustainable growth model and that’s good news for the platform, the readers, and the writers.

6. You can still share your links on other platforms

It’s important to emphasize that Medium does encourage sharing links to Medium stories on other platforms.

If you are a Friend of Medium, you can share a friend link of any story (not just your own).

This is a way to spread the word about what Medium has to offer.

Medium is similar to a lot of other publishing platforms, but things like the Boost program and the wide variety of publications make it unique.

It seems like every few months Medium rolls out something new, and those changes keep you on your toes.

As a writer, you do have to adapt, but I feel the changes are always conceived to help give people a place where their voices can be heard.

Of all the platforms available, I feel that Medium is doing the best job at elevating human content.

Ultimately, the best way to succeed on Medium is to take advantage of the community, listen to the advice of editors, and continue to improve your writing skills.
